Number Gender

Do your numbers have genders?

Yesterday while driving, out of the blue my 7 year old says from the backseat, "Mama, 9 is a girl." I immediately disagreed with her and told her that 9 is indeed a boy. About that time I noticed my 11 year old looking at me like I was nuts. So I asked her if she thought 9 was a boy or girl and her response was, "I have no idea what you two are talking about."

That's when it occurred to me that maybe not every one's numbers have genders. I immediately dialed my crazy friend to ask her if her numbers have genders. I knew for sure she would say yes and make me feel saner, WRONG! I'm pretty sure she thought I'd been smokin' crack. I've since asked a couple more people and I've yet to find another adult who's numbers have genders.

So inquiring minds (mainly just mine) want to know... Do your numbers have genders? If so what are they? For instance my numbers 1,6,7,9 and 0 are all males while 2,4,5 and 8 are female. I've never really been able to put a gender label on 3, I think he/she might have numeral gender identity issues. Someone told me 3 should be a female because it's curvy. That then led me to wonder why exactly my numbers have the genders they do or why I've gendered my numbers at all. It's not something I did consciously, it's simply always been that way for as long as I can remember.

So please, I want to hear from others about this. Unless your a mental health professional and you plan to tell me I'm not well (I already know that so let's just keep it between us).

When I was little whenever I had colouring pencils out, I'd stack them in male and female groups.
I have had same feelings to numbers, letters, words. Yeah and some are more feminine or manly than others. It's good to know that there are a whole bunch of people with similar sort of thing.

I love reading personal blogs, Mommy blogs, etc ... Very best easiest
way to locate these types of blogs online? The best method I have is simply following favorites people have -
likely to one bloggers "favorites" then your next bloggers
favorites, and so forth... I've tried Google Blogsearch but everything gives me is old news articles, etc . Nothing personal whatsoever... How do you search for personal blogs?.

It's most closely related to ordinal linguistic SYNESTHESIA. But that's what we have! I do it too with letters, numbers up to 100 and months of the year. For numbers here:
1 m
2 f
3 f tomboy
4 f
5 m

7 m
8 f
9 f

I have been thinking the some thing about letters lately. Being an left-brained perfectionist, I had to explain why letters seem to have personalities to me. I myself don't have genders for them, but each one has always behaved uniquely and has certain interests. Coming together to form a word is interacting or socializing for the letters.

Every word needs a vowel, just like every social group needs an extrovert. Therefore, the vowels must be able to supply meaning to the word, and we know they can.

Prefix "co-"
Let's start with O, because it is the simplest shape. Just looking at it I can tell that it means "complete" "independent" and "one." (*For later reference, O has the properties of ideas.*) The letter C is the exact same thing as o but missing a piece and is therefore "incomplete" "dependent" and "partial." Since C can't survive on his/her own, C goes to O for help. O agrees, and C latches on to his/her side. For me, that's why the Latin prefix "co-" means "together."

This blew my mind, and I had to continue and complete a pattern for the whole alphabet. And so far, everything is consistent. Although I am not done, I've come up with the same thing for about eight more letters.

The word "is"
I is the vowel, so where does it come from? I's lower case is obviously a picture of a human body with his/her hands and legs at his/her sides, so let's assume "I" is also a picture of the human body in some way. *That would give the properties of being physical or concrete.* S is two Cs put together. I imagine it like so; two Cs are frantically searching for an idea from a vowel to give them meaning. They lock eyes for a moment and grab onto eachother. After it's too late, they each realize the other is not independent, but now they are stuck together facing opposite directions. This creates a new letter, S, which pulls ideas toward it in both directions. But when he/she catches an idea from a vowel, S spins and the idea passes on to the next letter over. S connects the the letters in front of and behind him/her. Put I and S together. *I has the meaning of a concrete thing,* *and S ideas from vowels to other letters.* "is" always comes after a noun and connects it to the Dicrect Object.
i.e. "He is tall." "He" is the the noun. I in "is" is referring to "He", because "He" is a concrete thing. "tall" is a verb and gives off meaning. S catches that meaning and spins it around to I. I and "He" are connected by reference, so the meaning of "tall" is sent to "He".

Prefix "in-"
We already covered I, so on to N. All throughout history, a diagonal slash means "don't" or "the opposite of". N is basically the slash made into a literary symbol. The slash alone is a bit too abstract to be a symbol. So in a prefix, suffix, or root, N flips the meaning of a neighbooring letter or letters (I'm not quite sure yet). So N next to an I would mean "it is not... (root/suffix)"

I've found that the process of applying these to other words could be as simple as changing each letter to a word and each word to a sentence. That would give you the definition of the word. Remeber though, the list below is not anywhere near complete, and I am suspecting that, based on whether the root being analysed is Latin or not, the word for each letter might change.
I="it"
S="is"
O="one"
C="with"
E=(usually has to do with time, I can't think of a single word that aptly fits E)
N="not"
U="below" (I could be wrong)
P="basic" or "fundamentally"
T=(it recieves meaning from vowels and makes them in terms of action)
D=(it's kind of like N but I haven't studied this enough to know exactly how they differ)

Numbers and letters obviously have gender (and dominance).
0 - M - strong man
1 - M
2 - M
3 - F - sweet
4 - M
5 - M
6 - F
7 - M - suave
8 - F - kind of a tough girl
9 - F - matronly
10 - M

Male Letters: B,D,E,F,I,J,L,M,N,O,R,T,U,V,W,X,Z
Female Letters: A,C,G,H,K,O,P,Q,S,Y

Don't know why the male weighting.

I'm sure like all things brain something like Ordinal Linguistic Personification (a form of Synesthesia) has all sorts of levels of intensity. I can't believe at 33 years of age I just now Googled for something that I have always accepted as a universal given.

6- female, responsible, loner, looks after others
7- male, immature, mean, talkative

Incredible to see a thought process that's been with me since about 4 years old become something I don't feel so whack about anymore! Thanks common thinkers! So I think the gender personifications to letters and numbers could have come from when we were just leaning ABC's and number lines. remember the flash cards and big number lines as borders around the first young classrooms? I think the "B" card could have had "Boy"- which of course is why B is a boy in my mind. lol And "F" as Fireman etc...or "C" for cupcake, could be a girly thought, sweet and pretty... and the little art and photos on the number lines or flash cards "3" and it has 3 flowers on it to show the kid how many 3 looks like.. Maybe this could be why we have personal different genders for everything.
Or we just see the shape more gender specific. I wonder if everyone sees zero and letter "O" as the same gender? Anyway, most of the circular looking numbers are girls to me: here is mine, and it has never changed. Just as hell bent that my genders are right as everyone else is! Funny. My daughter has all the same except 1 of mine.

1- Male, but young
2- 1's older brother, but no by much
3- girl
4- boy (the one daughter differs)
5- boy
6- girl who loves 7
7- boy
8- girl
9- girl
10- girl

A-boy
B-boy
c- girl
d- boy
e- boy
f- boy
g- boy
h-boy
i- boy (looks like a 1)
j- boy
k- girl
l- boy
m- boy
n- boy
o- girl
p- girl
q- girl
r- girl
s- girl
t- boy
u- boy
v- boy
w- boy
x- girl
y- girl

My husband thinks I'm a nut, has noooo thought about gender on numbers and letters! HA!

Haha this is so cool, I always wondered whether there were other people who had this, cause I know about many forms of synesthesia (I am a psychology student and one of my best friends has the classical grapheme-colour synesthesia) but I thought maybe associating genders to numbers and letters didn´t count, because I never heard or read about it anywhere and I thought maybe it wasn´t weird enough... but apparently it is!!
For me it´s something very mild and vague, letters and numbers have a gender but not a specific personality or anything else, and I honestly never know whether it´s something real that I still experience or whether it is just a memory from childhood. But anyway :

Female letters : A, M, N, S, V, W
Male letters : all others
Except E which I somehow can´t place.
Female numbers : 2, 4, 9
Male numbers : all others
Yup, gender is kind of skewed...
And I think for numbers with more than one digit it depends on the last digit.

klara said...

Oh and one more thing! After reading one of the comments I realized I also associated genders to colours, but somehow never really thought about it, haha! When I was a kid I classified colours in male-female couples like this :
Black (m) - White (f)
Brown (m) - Orange (f)
Purple (m) - Pink (f)
Blue (m) - Red (f)
Green (m) - Yellow (f)
Grey (m) - Beige (f)

I hesitate about blue and red and I remember adding beige just because I thought it was sad that grey didn´t have a partner, but I´m pretty sure about the rest :P

8 brown
9 yellow green
10 black
And, I associate the alphabet as colors and numbers. I would love to understand why I am like this.

1 is a male with low self esteem and is friends with 2, who is a girl and secretly has a crush on her. 3 is also male and he also likes 2. 4 is a male and is 5's little brother.5 is male most of the time(depending on the situation sometimes it's female) and is friends with 6, a male. 7 is a tomboy and seems to be married to 6. 8 and 9 seem to be brothers, 9 being smart and 8 being a bit slow and 10 is 1's stronger older brother. I could also tell you this with letters, colors, days of the week, and months too. I know that my mom and brother also think like this but i've never really asked them what they were to them.

I am over the moon in happiness knowing that others have this gender association with numbers and the alphabet! No one else I have ever discussed this with has thought like this. THANK YOU to the creator of this blog and to all that have commented. I'm so happy I could cry. Yet now I'm curious where this thought stream has come from. Hmmm... something in our past?

Wow!! have been reading this for almost 1/2 and hour and feeling a kin ship with my fellow OLP'ers.

I too have gender associations with letters, numbers, shapes, months, days, etc.

For me:
1,4,6,9 are female
2,3,5,7,8,10 are male

and like other have said, the double and triple, etc. number are genred based on the first #, so 475, although has more male numbers in it, is female because of the 4.

However, I discovered when it came to years, that the rule switches, the gender of a year is it last #, so, this year 2014 is female because of the 4 at the end.

I read too in someone's post that they have it for silverware, and that was cool to me becasue I do that too, but NEVER heard of any one else. We even agreed, fork is female and spoon and knife are male.

I don't have the colour or personalities for them, so I am probably low on the Synesthesia scale, but non the less, feeling that this ability if pretty cool!

From the reading I ahve done, it looks like it is more common with creative people, and I am a designer, so I look at it as an advantage!

I discove

I am so glad I found this blog. I have never discussed number gender with anyone. Im not crazy. Well not totally. LOL.
I see
1,4,7 as male and 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9 as female. I didnt realize until I questioned myself what the difference was and in my comparison I realized that my male numbers all have straight lines and the female numbers all have at least one curve.
I also see gender in the alphabet.

Someone told me of this just today and he said I was one of two people he knew to have it. But we're all wackos, so no need to worry. When I was like two, yeah I really remember this, I went up to my dad and said, "Does 'i' like 's'?". Since then I've just thought it was another weird thing about me. Then today someone told me I have this rare thing, and I realized, my whole life I've been genderizing numbers and letters, and to know that I'm not a lonely wacko with a weird problem is so cool.

But for me the numbers are:

1: female
2: female
3: male
4: female
5: male
6: male
7: female
8: male
9: female
10:female

I can't believe I never noticed this till now! But it's not only numbers for me, it's letters too. This weird thing we have is called synesthesia. And I am no doctor. Plus, I noticed a couple posts ahead that someone spelled there nickname M.A.D.I, and I only know one other person to spell their nickname like that, so I like it!

I have not been thinking to much of this before, but for sure my numbers have had gender from way back. I am now 33 years old. This is a bit puzzling, what is this phenomenon and the psychology or neuropsychology behind it?

This is how I see the numbers:

Wow, I googled this topic to see how many other people might do this and if there is a name for this weirdness, for the lack of a better term. I have thrown this out at my friends and relatives for years sporadically and all of them have always said "What?????". I see 1,3,4,7,8,0 as male, and 2,5,6,9 are female, however 12 is made up of both a male and a female and I see 12 as female as well as 15,16,19,20 but 21,23,24,27,28 are all male, even though they also have a male and female! I also see the alphabet in male and female. A,C,D,K,P,Q,R,S,V and Z are female and all the others are male! I could go on about other subjects out there, but I won't. I am just amazed at how many other people, SANE people, I have found out there that do the same thing!

Finally! Someone who understands!
I agree with your daughter though. 9 is definitely a girl =D
I do see numbers with genders. I have never thought about letters having gender, but I'm pretty sure I can separate them because it makes sense to me. I also used to see colors and shapes with names, but I lost that as I grew up and no one understood me.
0=boy
1=boy
2=boy
3=girl
4=boy
5=seems to be a snobby girl, perfectionist...maybe its because 5+5=10 does anyone else get this?

6=a prissy girl
7=boy, I never liked him, I feel like both he and 4 betrayed 3, maybe because 3+4=7
8=a tomboy
9=a girl, a big sister
10=boy...and so on. I always had the suspicion that 9 and 10 had something going on.
The genders of numbers with more than one digit are represented by the last digit.

I see that others are just like me when it comes to assigning gender to letters and numbers. To me, I see, 0, 1,5, 6, 7, and 9 are all males. 6 and 9 are chubby guys. And, 2, 3, 4, and 8 are female. 3 and 4 are strong and curvy. 2 and 8 are just curvy. As for letters, A,B, P, S, U, V, W, X,Y, M are female and the rest are male.

I have always associated numbers, days of the weeks, months, And letters as genders. I have asked people if they think the same way and they have. I've always been curious about it.
I think of 1,2,4,5,7,12 as male, and 3,6,8,9,10,11 as female. I also find it odd that I view the number 1 as a male, but the number 11 a female. The days of the week I view as female are, Monday, Wednesday, Saturday. Letters I view as female for example are, A, B, C, D, G, K, M, N, O, P, Q...ETC. I'm not sure why but I find it somewhat fascinating. Its interesting to find people that think like me, and wonder why the mind works the way it does.

1, 4, 7, 8 are boys
10 is a grown man
2 is a girl, so are 5 and 6
9 is a woman... older.
3 is ambiguous. If it were to associate with anything it would associate with the boys, but really... it has no gender. It can go either way

Yes... the alphabet has gender too.

As a child I always looked at my numbers and letters as male and female. I even have some letters and numbers that can cross gender as being unisex. Some letters and numbers with curves do come across as female while others are male or unisex. Example for me is: "B,C,D" are all male and "J,M,W" are female while "E,G,L,O" are unisex. As for numbers, "1,6,7,9" are all male and "2,3,4,5" are all female while "9,0" are unisex. I also see in color but color is more associated in object shapes and sight words when reading. Example: Triangle I see Red, Circle I see Yellow, Square I see Blue. Sight words like, "Is" is a purple female. "The" is a green male.

I have always been curious about this and have tried to ask my friends if they associate with this process and they all look at me like I am strange. So I am glad I came across this blog and happy to read that there are others that I can identify with on this. I say we are not strange people, we are just the type of people that can see things in a different scope and can easily travel between the black and white lines of life and see the color between those lines easier than others. Thus making some of us more creative, artistic, analytical, and vivid in our relationships with people. :)

Cool to see how everyone perceives their male and female energies in regards to numbers. Mine have always been the following:

0-Male
1-Female
2-Female
3-Male
4-Male
5-Male
6-Male
7-Female
8-Male
9-Male
10-Male
11-Female
12-Female

This is all offensive. Yes numbers clearly have genders but i have noticed all of you tend to say only male or female. Personally i would say 1 and 2 are clearly male, and the number 3 is clearly female. But as far as 4 and 5 i would say they are a gender more closely described as furries, more specifically ponies. The number 6 is clearly asexual, and seems to be the type of gender that would fall into the house raven claw in Harry Potter. Anyway you should make a better effort to accept all genders on your blog. Or you may be featured on my own, much more relevant gender blog.

Your story sounds a lot like one I heard from a friend of mine, who associates numbers with colors. She didn't realize it wasn't something everybody did because when she was growing up, her and her sisters would fight about the color of a number.

When she told me the story, I said that I didn't think numbers had colors, but they do have genders. (This is the first time I realized it wasn't "normal".) It doesn't stop there. Colors, days of the week, months of the year...they all have genders. She thinks I'm the one that's strange...lol. I actually don't think it's too far-fetched though. After all, there are languages (i.e. Spanish) that assign nouns as masculine or feminine; it's not all that different, is it?

1, 4, 7 are males; 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 0 are females. (When you get into the double digits, the gender works with the last number, so 10 (because of 0 its female, 11, male, 12 female, etc.)

I do, however, associate pastel colors with babies. So, pink for girls, blue for boys, twins are yellow (which happens to correspond with my friend's color for the number 2), and triplets are green (which corresponds with my friend's color for the number 3).

Never found anyone else that associates numbers and letters with genders. I've only read some of the other comments, but the ones I have, some were close, only off by 1 or 2. I did write early, even cursive before kindergarten, so the 2-3 yr old human gender identifying age theory could be connected. I practiced for hours at a time and have wondered about a high functioning Autism connection.
I did a search after seeing an artist that associated colors, and found you all here. Thank you for doing this blog, and all of you, for existing.

I have synesthesia, and have always associated gender to numbers & letters for as long as I can remember. Here’s how I see them:

Female
3,5,6,8,9
A,K,M,P,Q,R,S,V,X,Y

Male
0,1,2,4,7,10
B,D,E,F,H,I,J,L,O,T,U,W,Z

C,G,N don’t really have a gender, but if I had to pick, I would say they are feminine males

I forgot to mention, I also do it for weekdays & months:

Female
Sunday, Monday, Wednesday
January, April, May, September, November

Male
Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
March, July, August, December

Androgynous
Friday
February, June, October

Interestingly, I have considered numbers to be gendered since my childhood. Curiously, I only made a search today and found that people have debated that idea for a long time.
In fact, the idea in my mind was further embellished, as follows: 1 is a man standing on a spot; 2 is a male child kneeling in prayer; 3 is a woman dancing; 4 is male with bushy hair, and also a wooden chair; 5 is a woman buxom and with big hips, riding a bicycle; 6 is female and pregnant; 7 is a man standing akimbo; 8 - I'm somewhat undecided here, but it is also a large python or anaconda rising out of water; 9 is a big-headed man; 10 is a child rolling a tyre along the road.
This was exactly how it seemed when I was a child.
Honestly, it appears to me that the shapes of these numbers have contributed to my gender ideas, for instance, the praying little 2 on his knees, the curvy dancing female 3, the pregnant female 6, the big-headed male 9. I don't know, maybe I was only judging from their shapes. I have never thought of reviewing my impression.
And, guess one more thing. I have also always assigned colours to sounds, again since my childhood. Only recently did I realize that it is not so with other people. So, I searched, and behold, it's a known phenomenon called chromesthesia, a form of synesthesia.
Can you give me your own ideas about this?

Numbers have always subconsciously appeared a certain gender to me, for no intricate reason. It’s just the way I always saw them for as long as I can remember, although my gender ratio is a bit skewed. I also associate traits to them as well

1 - kind elderly woman, gives off androgynous vibes
2 - sweet young humble girl, down to earth
3 - bossy girl and full of herself, and a bit tomboyish. 2’s older sister
4 - nerdy girl whom excels academically, but is awkward and intimidated by guys
5 - very macho guy that likes to flirt with all the girls
6 - beautiful and feminine model associated with magazine covers and name brand clothing
7 - middle aged annoying Karen, who’ll b*tch just about anything you can think of. Also kind of tomboyish like number 3
8 - lesbian woman in a relationship with 9
9 - as mentioned above with 8

(Female: 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9 || Male: 5)
